Record Store Day...

One Last Thing On Record Store Day...

BILLBOARD.biz
By Chris M. Walsh, N.Y.

It keeps snowballing, doesn't it? By all accounts this year's Record Store Day was, again, a success when measured by awareness, turnout and sales. And because many Record Store Day reports tend to be anecdotal, it's nice to get a look at some numbers. The event's co-founder, Michael Kurtz of Music Monitor Network, shared some 2010 RSD highlights with Billboard.biz.

From Kurtz:

Here are a few store stats to give you a sense of the day:
- Other Music had their best single day in their 14 year history.
- The Sound Garden had their busiest day in years, outpacing Christmas sales for the past couple of years.
- Vintage Vinyl sold more stuff on RSD than any other day in the stores’ history.
- Twist N Shout reported the best sales they’ve ever had in a single day.
- RSD 2010 was Sonic Boom’s single biggest sales day in their 12 year history.
- Silver Platters’ sales on RSD 2010 were up 80% from last year (which were up 20% from the year before).
- Exclusive Company’s RSD 2010 sales increased 102% from RSD 2009.
- Dimple did twice as much in sales from last year’s RSD event.

Random RSD mentions
They were everywhere. From Howard Stern talking us up, to RSD signs appearing on the Today Show, to Jimmy Fallon’s shout out to the RSD joke on Saturday Night Live, to being talked about on Alice Cooper ’s syndicated radio show, to three different NPR stories, to the publishing of two books with a focus on Record Store Day and indie record stores, and on and on.

Recordstoreday.com
In 2008 there were 429 Stores registered on the site.
In 2009 we were up to 1091 Stores
There are currently 1,627 Stores registered on the site today.

Sales
I’ve been provided numbers from various sources and here are some that I’d like to share.

For the MMN stores, we saw significant growth from last year’s RSD. Stores reported increased sales from 20% on the small end, up to over 100% on the high end.

According to Street Pulse, comparing RSD 2010 to RSD 2009 showed an increase of overall sales by 135.4%

Here was their breakdown:
All Music + 135.4%
Vinyl + 376.7%
CD + 40.4%
Video - 38.6%
Merch + 28.5%

Also, and this is an interesting fact, according to Nielsen Soundscan, Record Store Day 2010 was the biggest day of sales for vinyl in Soundscan’s history. This is definitely good news for vinyl record, and turntable, manufacturers.
